Well, yesterday was an adventure, eh? I should say that Connie was the driver to and from St. Luke's in the OP. All of us had fun saying what a crazy situation it was. Also, Jenna's grandparents took us all out to Applebee's, where Lois said we should have told our waitress we were celebrating eye surgery. Anyway, here are some details about retinal detachments and Jenna's surgery. The docs say that her retina detached due to her nearsightedness, not due to eye strain at work or anything like that. Also, at some point in everyone's lives the gel inside our eyes turns to liquid. Her eyes have already gone through "the change" but her retina did not take well to this transition due to the nearsightedness and shape of her eye. Today, she will be having a surgery called The Buckle, where they will put a silicone kind of headband around her eye that will stay there for life. Once the buckle is on, the doctor will also use a lazer to kind of glue the retina back to the back wall of the eyeball. There are other ways to do retinal reattachments, but Jenna's doctor said that The Buckle is the best option for her. Her eye will be quite swollen, but she is glad she will not have to be awake for this surgery and that it will take just about 1.5 hours. Here is a picture of a retinal detachment. Jenna's actually looks just about like this, as the bottom part of her retina is the part that is detached.
Also, her eye will actually be more nearsighted after surgery for a few months and she will have to wait those few months until she can get a new glasses prescription. She should be OK to go back to work as a proofreader, though, so that was good news. So Jenna and I are here at downtown St. Luke's and she has just gone to fill out all the paperwork before her surgery at 10:30 am. Thanks for the comments and prayers! |
